Marketing Mistakes That Will Cripple Your Company!

It does not matter what kind of business you are in, errors are bound to happen. All employees make mistakes every day. There are a number of factors contributing to these errors such as: company size, number of employees, and management failing to keep track of departmental progress. If you are in marketing and want to avoid making most of the mistakes, you have to evaluate precisely what you are doing and why.

No Marketing Plan

Entrepreneurs and small business owners seldom put together a marketing plan. Lacking concern over the development of a plan is due the method which small business owners use to fund their business endeavors. More than 50% of small businesses begin on a shoestring budget, and don't seek assistance from outside investors.

To succeed, it is imperative to any business that a marketing plan be devised. It is like taking a map with you on that road trip across the country. You would not want to get lost, would you? Running a business without a marketing plan is a recipe for failure. You have to separate the various marketing elements and craft a plan designed for success and you will eliminate the fear of failure.

Being Oblivious to the Market

It is not uncommon for someone to not analyze their market by asking the who, what, where and when questions that can help you understand it. Your target market must be accessible because if it is not, you are in trouble.

The "who" is referring to the kind of customer that would buy your products or services. You want to make a list with categories for gender, age or demographic groups, and even local places.

"Where" is where your prospects are located. This might include the immediate area surrounding your business and also the location of competitor's customers.

You also need to know what limits are in place. Location is critical so found out about the location of your competition and what areas they service. Knowing this will help you found out if any limitation need to be looked into further.

Interchanging Products and Services

Business diehards often enter one endeavor after another without being specific. Mass confusion occurs when this happens because there is no definition of "what type" of products and/or services the company sells. Most of these businesses use the term "full-service" as a title of what they do for the customer. Interchanging products and services may fatten your profit, but it causes too much customer confusion to be worthwhile.

Nonexistent Business Plan

Marketing 101-"Don't begin a business without a Business Plan!" A business plan built on the promises and actions of others is doomed. The "dream" needs to be real and believable. Each step should be calculated and achieved by the efforts of one person - you. The company needs a foundation built upon the owners experience and knowledge.

Not Responding to Customer Needs

The business world continues to spin faster and faster so you need to immediately respond to the concerns of your customers. Slow response times can cost you customers. The holidays are a great example.

With little or no time to spare, a customer dashes into the department store and is depressed by the sight of 50 people ahead of him in line.

A: Does the customer patiently wait in line? B: Does the retail manager open another register?

Of course, the answer is (B). In order to keep the customer happy, the retail manager opens another register to accommodate the crowd.

It is easy to avoid some of the more common marketing mistakes once you see that you are guilty of committing them. Plot a course of action and check progress monthly. You may want to invest in a business consultant to help you get everything in order. It could be money well spent.
